Identity Theft Help Is Out There

Defined Tag:

Can you imagine getting a bill for something someone else purchased? Can you imagine calling the credit card company only to learn that more purchases were made? The credit card company nowadays will probably be helpful by taking the charge off the account and closing it to prevent the thief from obtaining more money fradualently.

This happens to thousands of people everyday. It's called identity theft: people stealing other people’s identities in order to make major purchases or to steal from bank accounts. Identity theft has become even easier to execute due to the internet. Buying something online or paying bills online is usually safe, but people can still steal your personal information and subsequently your money if you make a purchase through a site that is not secure.

But do not dispair if you have fallen into this trap. There is plenty of identity theft help available both over the Internet and from government agencies, including the FBI.

But before you seek out identity theft help, you should first close all bank accounts and credit card accounts. This is relatively easy for some. For others, their entire credit history may be ruined because someone has stolen their money and credit cards.

Having one's identity stolen can take years to clean up. Once someone has someone else's personal information, they can assess any funds that are attached to their name. Even when credit cards have been canceled, new accounts can be opened and the pain of the theft is all the more visible. Some people have lost their homes, jobs, and families due to divorce caused by stress.

Defending oneself against identity theft begins with making sure bill paying is done on secure sites that make it difficult to break in and steal personal information. There are computer programs available, such as firewalls and Norton anti-virus that prohibit people from breaking into another person's computer by sending viruses that can disable protective software. Identity theft help is also available from government agencies for those who have had all their money stolen and personal information sold.
